On a wet, chilly Saturday in February, Roots for the Future’s co-founders Dan and Francesca planted three new Prunus Kanzan along much loved Cherry Tree Rd in Milford, Surrey.

When in full bloom, the road is utterly stunning as you can see from this photo taken in the height of the first lockdown by local Colin Simmons. No cars!

Here they are, golden red in the autumn.

Despite the wind, rain and excess mud on Saturday, it was an absolute joy to add new trees to this beautiful avenue.

We also put protective fencing around the younger trees that had been planted a few years ago. Grass strimmers getting too close to the tree trunks damages the bark and eventually kills the trees. So it is essential to protect the young trees to give them the best start. We also put water bags on the trees so they can be irrigated in the hotter, drier periods.

We absolutely loved working with Witley and Milford Borough Council on this project. By hiring Roots for the Future to plant and maintain, local authorities meet their social value obligations, while we put in our expertise and love for trees, and the environment.
